(San Luis Obispo, California) 9 February 2006 -- Brigham Young stifled Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo to post a 30-10 nonleague win, a surprisingly powerful display for the Cougars’ opening match and another victory for Utah collegians visiting the Golden State.
BYU scored four tries against a solo five-pointer for the Mustangs, who lost for the first time this season. Led by All-American and USA center Salesi Sika, defensive pressure on Cal Poly’s outside backs, including fellow All-Americans Ed Pitts and Cam Mauritson, was key to the team's performance, according to BYU coach David Smyth.
Sika added 10 points goalkicking for BYU, which plays UCLA tomorrow in Los Angeles. The Mustangs resume league play next week against San Diego State.
